About 3 months ago AT&T Femtocell bemoaned that AT&T, alone among the US carriers, still didn’t offer a femtocell, a small cellular base station which connects to your cell phone service provider’s network via your home’s broadband connection (thus bypassing a weak over the air signal) and broadcasts a strong signal through your home.
AT&T now has a 3G MicroCell site. So presumably its femtocell will at long last be released? Well …
AT&T’s 3G MicroCell runs $150 in Charlotte trial, service is free without unlimited calling reports that AT&T’s femtocell is up and running! But only in Charlotte NC … and as a trial. No indication how long a trial. Update: AT&T’s 3G MicroCell tested and reviewed by Charlottean: yes, it works
What will this bad boy cost you when/if it’s released to us poor slobs who don’t live in Charlotte and endure AT&T’s network? Apparently there is a $150 one-time charge for the device. Unless you purchase “unlimited” service, when you get a $100 rebate.
Of course, “unlimited” has its price. $19.99 per month to be exact. Yikes! Though this monthly dole is reduced to $9.99 if you have either a landline or broadband with AT&T, and free if you have both. Update: AT&T 3G MicroCell pricing explained: not just $20 unlimited calls
In addition to petty monetary concerns, also yet unanswered is the question posed in 3G FemtoCell; whether the device supports 3G data. Presumably more details should be forthcoming shortly.
I just don’t like at&t there a big monopoly
True. But if your their customer, you still need a good cell connection, monopoly or not. You would think though that they should pay you, rather than the other way around, as they’re using your bought and paid for network connection to alleviate the load on their inadequate network.
They are such a bad monopoly that they can’t even keep up with 3g in San Francisco. They also have horrible reception in Montana if any.
Yep, their S.F. service, or lack thereof, is legendary.
[...] AT&T 3G MicroCell Femtocell (Updated) told you only 1 week ago that, after seeming eons, AT&T at long last finally has deployed its femtocell, which it calls a 3G MicroCell. I don’t care if AT&T calls it a power toaster; I want it now. But alas, AT&T first is deploying it on a trial basis in Charlotte and Raleigh, NC. [...]
