BlackBerry Bold Touch (and friends?)

Sunday, April 24th, 2011

Will I buy the BlackBerry PlayBook? I told you there I might buy a PlayBook after buying one of the forthcoming BlackBerry phones to be announced at BlackBerry World during the first week in May. I’m not the only one thinking this way: BlackBerry PlayBook; a good reason to buy a BlackBerry smartphone.

But which new BlackBerry phone. BGR’s RIM’s 2011 BlackBerry lineup explained showed several choices, including a Bold Touch and a 3rd generation Storm (albeit under a different name).

BGR giveth, BGR taketh away. RIM to announce only one phone at BlackBerry World? reported:

“We’ve heard from two independent sources that RIM is planning on announcing only one handset at BlackBerry World next week, the BlackBerry Bold Touch (or whatever name it ends up launching with). Yeah, that’s right… the company has six major products in the pipeline, all currently set to be released between June and September, and it is only going to announce one of them at the biggest Blackberry event of the year. We’re told this was a last minute change, and if it ends up panning out, well, it’s just plain stupid.”

I’m not all that broken hearted; I was planning on the Bold Touch anyway. A variant is reported to be coming to Verizon, when reported to be July. June would be nice of course Smile

Will I buy the BlackBerry PlayBook?

The BlackBerry PlayBook is out! There’s a lot to like. QNX OS, 7” form factor, muscular specs (1 GHz dual-core processor, 1 GB RAM).  And I’ve always liked Berries, though I’ve drifted away of late because RIM has been living in the past in its phone designs. So will I succumb to the siren song of this latest, greatest gadget? Here are my thoughts, and I’d be very interested in yours.

BlackBerry Last Hope

imageBlackBerry is my favorite OS. But I also like large capacitive screen phones. Currently I can’t have both. The closest is the Storm 2. But its screen size is only 3.25”. Nowhere close to the new standard of 3.7” (Droid, Nexus One, etc.), much less the 4+” screen of the HD2 and other phones.

Further, the Storm 2 is a disappointingly incremental refresh of the original Storm, which I still use while … waiting. As one of my students told me when returning the Storm 2 for the Droid, the Storm 2 is so … yesterday. I agree. The Storm 2 is what the original Storm should have been. But the original Storm was released November 21, 2008. That’s right, 2008. RIM, it’s 2010.

Rumors are that RIM will have exciting new device news at WES 2010, which will take place April 27-29. I guess I can wait that long. But if RIM disappoints me … again … then its probably time to move on.

Upgrade Decision

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

image That’s not the proverbial donkey starving between two equidistant bales of hay. Instead, as Upgrade Now? Or Wait? told you, it’s me dithering over whether to use my 1 year Verizon upgrade to transition to the Blackberry Storm2 (released late October), pounce on the Motorola Droid (released November 6), or wait, such as for the HTC Dragon aka Passion, which may be released by mid-December. Have I made any decisions? Well, sort of.

Enter the Dragon … and the X10

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

No, not the famous Bruce Lee martial arts movie of over 35 years ago. Nor is the X10 a successor to the first supersonic fighter, the X-1. (Boy am I dating myself). Instead, you now can add two more large capacitive touchscreen phones to the growing list we’ve been discussing recently.

Dithering between the Storm2 and the Droid

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

imageAlmost one year ago, on November 21, 2008, I bought the Blackberry Storm, naturally on its very first day of availability on the Verizon network. I’ve enjoyed the Storm. Nevertheless, during the past months I’ve been looking forward to the Storm’s new and substantially improved successor, the Storm2.

Verizon will give you a discounted upgrade after one year, assuming your account is in good standing (as mine is since my wife pays the bills). Verizon’s release of the Storm2 now is only days away; perhaps as soon as October 28. Further, Verizon customer service, knowing a sucker good customer when they see one, graciously agreed to accelerate my upgrade eligibility date from November 21 to today. So I’m writing to tell you that I’m ready to pounce on the Storm2, right? Well, not exactly.

Planned Storm2 upgrade has hit the Sholes?

Sunday, October 18th, 2009

image The Motorola Sholes that is. OK, admittedly a bad pun. You get what you pay for.

Back to the Sholes. Or Droid (as in Android, its OS). Motorola Droid hands on! tells us the OS version will be 2.0 aka Éclair, recently previewed by BGR. BGR also confirms the screen will be capacitive. Woot! BGR doesn’t report the screen size, but previous reports were 3.7”. Not as large as some of the 4+” devices we’ve talked about, but large enough, and perhaps more pocketable. The processor is not the Qualcomm Snapdragon, but instead a perfectly decent alternative, the TI OMAP3430.

Best (for me), the Sholes is coming to Verizon. So I could upgrade to the Sholes instead of the Storm2. Hence this post’s title.

The rumored release date of October 30 is only about 2 weeks away. However, I suspect a release around Turkey Day may be a better bet.

Will I spurn the Storm2 for the Sholes? Dunno. First, I don’t yet have enough information on Sholes. Second, I’ve never owned an Android OS phone before, whereas I’m very familiar and comfortable with the Blackberry OS. Yet, all things being equal, a 3.7” screen is far more attractive (to me) than a 3.25” screen.

So even if I could upgrade to Storm2 tomorrow, I wouldn’t. Instead, I’d wait until I had more solid information on the Sholes. Besides, what would I do with two Verizon phones, a Storm2 and a Sholes? That would be ridiculous! Right? Right?

And not to complicate matters … but there’s also the rumored HTC Dragon. Also an Android OS, perhaps a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and a larger screen like the HTC HD2. Little further information at this time. But if the rumors pan out, the Dragon may (transitioning from bad puns to bad alliteration) put the Sholes in the shade.

Yes, you can wait forever for the next great device. But as long as I’m reasonably happy with my Storm –– on which I just loaded the latest OS 5.0 hybrid – I don’t mind waiting -– a little bit anyway.

Where’s Verizon’s BlackBerry Storm 2 Announcement?

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

imageCrackBerry (picture source) poses this question (and possible answers).

I tend to agree with Crackberry. Big Red probably is being very careful that the device first passes its technical review. The release of the original Storm was beset with technical problems and bad press which chilled enthusiasm for the device. Big Red does not want history to repeat itself. Deferring its release of the Storm2 for a few weeks is a far smaller price to pay.

Also yet to be announced are whether Big Red will offer any special upgrade to owners of the original Storm (like me). My guess is no, we’ll be in the same boat as everyone else. But at least my one year anniversary date (Storm, not wife) is coming up, so I soon will be able to more inexpensively upgrade (Storm, not wife).

BlackBerry Storm2 Almost Here

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

image It must be coming soon. RIM now has the Storm2 (model 9550) on its website. Not much information yet. Certainly no launch date, price or upgrade options yet. But RIM’s making the Storm2 official means its release date is imminent. Though when? Speculation seems divided between later this month, or next.

In the meantime, CrackBerry (the picture source) has a comprehensive review (plus specs and an image gallery) to study if you’re one of those persons trying to decide whether to get the Storm2 as an upgrade or new device. I’m one of those persons. Do I upgrade my Storm? I’m thinking … and weakening.
