Viliv X70 – OS Clean Start?

Monday, August 10th, 2009

image I just posted about my upgrade of the OS on my Viliv X70 from XP Home to XP Tablet PC 2005 Edition. The upgrade was successful, and I deliberately avoided a clean install to preserve Viliv software and drivers. Yet, I can’t wait until I can do a clean install of Windows 7. What’s wrong with me? Well, we don’t have enough time for that. But I will explain why I want to do a clean Windows 7 install.

Viliv X70 – Upgrading XP Home to Tablet PC Edition without an Install CD

Sunday, August 9th, 2009

tipjournal I successfully upgraded the XP Home OS on my Viliv X70 to XP Tablet PC 2005 Edition. Unfortunately, as you can see, my abysmal handwriting was not upgraded.

I have a Tablet PC edition install CD. But I didn’t use it for reasons I’ll explain. Instead, I added files and registry settings using a procedure available to any X70, S5 or XP owner.

How did I upgrade? Read on.

Viliv X70 – 3G Modem Speed Results

Friday, August 7th, 2009

Here are the results of my speed test using the X70’s 3G modem with an AT&T SIM in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles. Not bad. Voice calls also work as reported by Chippy of UMPCPortal (See Voice Calls on X70). Here are the settings I used:

Viliv X70 – No Online Drivers or Software

Friday, August 7th, 2009

imageViliv’s online downloads only are for the S5. No drivers or software for the X70.

I’ve confirmed this problem with Dynamism support, Chippy of UmpcPortal, and JKK of jkkMobile. Each of them tells me that they are contacting Viliv to put the X70 software and drivers online.

Dynamism support told me that the same situation happened when it first sold the S5. It took about two weeks for the drivers and software to show up on Viliv’s support site.

The lack of online drivers and software is not a problem if you want to restore, say after an OS crash.  As discussed in Viliv X70 – Partition and Parts, there is a 5GB hidden recovery partition.

Rather, the lack of online drivers and software is a problem for me because I want to upgrade my XP Home to XP Tablet PC edition. This upgrade could well render the Viliv software and drivers non-functional if not delete them altogether. JKK indicates that the S5 drivers mostly work on the X70. He’s likely correct, but mostly isn’t good enough for me.

So I’ll just use the waiting time to get to know my X70 better. There is a lot to learn. And if Viliv takes too long to put its X70 software and drivers online, I may decide the skip XP Tablet PC edition and go straight to Windows 7.

Viliv X70 – (Partition) Size Matters

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

imageViliv X70 – Partition and Parts told you that Viliv has divided my 128GB SSD into three partitions: 31.25 GB (FAT32) for the C drive, 83GB (NTFS) for the D drive, and 5GB for a hidden recovery partition.

To my (probably incorrect) way of thinking, dividing up a 128GB SSD so the C drive was only 32GB active partition defeated the purpose of obtaining a large (and expensive) 128GB SSD. So I wanted to combine the C and D drive into one, large C drive. However, I wanted to leave the 5GB hidden recovery partition alone since it is my failsafe (I hope).

I used Acronis Disk Director since I already own it and am comfortable using it. There are of course other (and free) alternatives.

The operation was lengthy but smooth. In the famous words of our 43rd President, mission accomplished! The C drive is now 114GB. There still is a D drive, but only about 15MB.

Now for the next step (gulp) … changing the OS from XP Home to XP Tablet PC. It sure would be easier if I had access to Windows 7 RTM. But I don’t. Instead, I have to wait for Windows 7 when it is released (at retail) to the huddled masses yearning to breathe free (of Vista).

Viliv X70 – Partition and Parts

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

imageI started up my Viliv X70 which was delivered earlier today. No problems. I then checked the properties of my C drive. I expected to see 128GB of SSD goodness. Instead I saw 32GB. WTF? I panicked. I thought Dynamism shipped me a 32GB instead of 128GB unit when I made the last minute changes described here. But as usual, my mistake.

Viliv X70 Arrived!

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

clip_image001[4]Rosa, our receptionist and the author of iPhooey, took delivery of my Viliv X70. Once I pry it from her hands, I’ll unbox the X70 and try to install XP’s Tablet PC edition over the XP Home edition it came with. I’ll then post how that went.

Viliv X70 – Shipping Today!

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

TrackingAfter my grading of Dynamism’s  handling of the delay of my Viliv X70 and S5 orders, and my last update, I learned that my X70’s shipment would be further delayed from today to next week.  But thanks to Dynamism’s customer service, the unit is shipping today and should arrive tomorrow . Here’s what happened.

Viliv X70 and S5 Shipping Update

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

image

Viliv X70 Delayed 2 Weeks told you that I learned from Dynamism that the shipment of my Viliv X70 has been delayed 2 weeks due to overseas components shortages. Apparently there will be no further delay. I just received an email from Dynamism telling me it will ship the first X70 orders this week. However, in the you have to take the bad with the good department, hot on the heels of the first email I received a second one that my Viliv S5 order, scheduled to ship this Wednesday, has been delayed 2 weeks because of – you guessed – a component shortage (screen modules). Read on for details.
